FDS (Fire Dynamics simulator) is the most complete and adaptable model developed by the Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the fires simulation. Installation is composed of two models: FDS, the solving model in the flow field and Smokeview dedicated to the post-processing steps and to the results viewing.

Since 2000, FDS is worldwide known as an appropriate analysis tool of the fluid dynamics factors after a fire. The most recent version of this code, the 5th released in 2007 and its further integration, is available on the website dedicate to the program (https://www.fire.nist.gov/fds).

This book presents the main elements included in the original English documents. The presentation has been conceived trying to relate the requirements in terms of completeness and simplicity of reading so the reader can get a closer look to the program.
For this purpose, the book include several calculation examples and explanation of the software coding syntax.
