EN: The overall quality of the indoor environment

IT: Qualità globale dell'ambiente interno

The overall quality of the indoor environment, also known by IEQ Indoor Environmental Quality, is understood as a set of thermal comfort, acoustic, visual and indoor air quality and is the main aspect with respect to Indoor Environmental Quality. The design, implementation and management of highly comfortable buildings is a challenge for the future, since very often the reach for IEQ opposes to that of energy saving. On the other hand, the IEQ has an increasingly important role in sustainability assessments, contributes to the value of real estate and has a considerable impact on the level of productivity of workers. Therefore, it is necessary to reach an even trade-off between energy savings and indoor environmental quality, which requires knowledge of the comfort theory, thermal acoustic or visual on one side, as well as the main standards and regulation that master these aspects of the design and management of buildings. Currently, the editorial market can offers several titles on each of these topics, but there is no trace of what might be called "the handbook of IEQ": this book tries to fill the gap. Being written by different authors selected from internationally acknowledged experts, professionals and deputies of companies interested in this subject, tackles in four different parts of the four aspects of indoor environmental quality with a shared methodology. Each part is accompanied by symbols and references as well as a glossary, which also allows those who are not experts in the field to fully understand the meaning of the terms and quantities used.

Each reader will find useful information in this text: the manager will find information on procedures and tools for the field evaluation of IEQ; the paragraphs relevant to the energy systems and building plants are supportive to anyone working in the HVAC industry, and case studies act as a handbook for evaluation in the field of comfort and air quality, and suggest some solutions to practical problems.
