In the upcoming future, heat pumps will get more and more important in the conditioning of new and refurbished buildings, also due to the compliance with the “RES” EU Directive 2009/28/EC and the related national implementation decree (Romani Decree nr. 28 – March 3, 2011).

The planning of a heat pump implementation faces some critical issues; the choice of the thermal energy source – without any doubts – is the most important one. Energetic performance strictly depends on the temperature level of the thermal source to which the pump has been coupled.

This book provides a focus on this topic by analyzing, for each thermal source the main issues, design aspects and calculation models of the seasonal energetic performances, by describing the main standards/laws and evaluating the consequences of the Romani Decree in terms of amount of energy produced by the renewable energy produced by the heat pumps.

The described thermal sources are: outdoor air, surface and underground water, soil, solar thermal, thermal energy recovery. Furthermore the book describes dual-source systems including a combination of two different thermal sources. The book ends with an energetic and economic analysis of heat pump implementations.
